Research Themes

Coastal adaptation & resilience

Florida’s beautiful coastlines attract visitors from all over the world and much of Florida’s growing population resides along the coast. FSU researchers from diverse fields are working across disciplines to advance understanding of how Florida’s coastal environments and communities are affected by both chronic and acute climate stressors, from sea level rise and coastal storms to extreme heat and drought, to inform effective approaches for minimizing future risks and impacts.

Resilience of Marine Environments

Marine ecosystems are increasingly sensitive to warming water temperatures and a range of other climate-related stressors. Research at Florida State is helping to assess the tolerance levels of aquatic and marine species and their habitats to climatic changes and the future resilience of these incredibly valuable yet sensitive ecosystems.

Society & Environment

The health and resilience of our communities and natural environments are intrinsically linked. Researchers at Florida State are exploring the roles and efficacy of nature-based solutions in enhancing socio-ecological resilience and adaptation to climate change and other natural hazards.

Climate Variability & Change

Florida State is home to many departments, centers, and research scientists that are working to achieve a better understanding of climate variability and change and how weather and climate extremes are impacting people, infrastructure, the economy, and the environment in Florida and beyond.
